The UN continues to support The Gambia’s smooth transition to democracy

The Special Representative of the Secretary General for West Africa and the Sahel Dr Mohamed Ibn Chambas came to The Gambia on a fact-finding mission
During the visit he met the President, former vice presidents Fatoumatta Jallow Tambajang and Ousainou Darboe, UNCT, Hon. Halifa Sallah, development partners and CSOs.
SRSG Chambas’ visit was a continuation of his engagements with political stakeholders and others in supporting The Gambia’s transition to democracy. Dr Chambas led several UN missions to Banjul to de-escalate tensions and encourage then President Yahya Jammeh and President-elect Adama Barrow reach a political settlement following the December 2016 post-election standoff.
