Celebrations of United Nations Day, 24 October 2020

To celebrate the 75th anniversary of the United Nations this year,  the United Nations System in The Gambia organised a series of events, which commenced  with the hoisting of the UN Flag at the UN House in Cape Point. This occasion was well attended by Government officials led by the Minister of Foreign Affairs, International Relations and Gambians Abroad, and Heads of UN Agencies in The Gambia as well as staff representatives of the various UN Agencies.

Seventy- five years after its founding, the UN continues the fruitful partnership with the people of The Gambia, which was demonstrated by the adoption of the Kotu Park. The ceremony, which was led by the Mayor of Kanifing, His Worship Talib Ahmed Bensouda and the UN Resident Coordinator, Ms. Seraphine Wakana, included the unveiling of a plaque bearing the name of the re-dedicated Kotu-UN75 Park. Children present in the Park were presented with a special SDGs-branded football, much to their delight.

The UN Country Team also participated in a live television and radio broadcast to commemorate the milestone anniversary. “The UN75 Dialogue and cultural show,” which featured a round table Davos-styled discussion on the contribution of the UN in The Gambia was interlinked with  performances of the work of young artists across The Gambia, who won the UN75 Dialogues poetry and painting competition. The live TV and Radio broadcast show was also open to callers who spoke about the UN’s work in the country. Simultaneous sign language interpretation of the live programme was done ensuring no one was left behind.

As part of the live broadcast, the Vice President of The Gambia made a statement celebrating the UN in The Gambia.
