Representative from The Ministry of Local Government, Lands & Religious Affairs,
Directors,
Colleagues from UN Habitat,
Development partners, and participants from all regions,
Good Morning to you all,
It is my distinct pleasure to join you today for this important training workshop on the Matrix of Functions methodology, a critical milestone in our collective journey toward sustainable urban development in The Gambia as outlined .
The Gambia stands at a defining moment. With urbanization advancing at one of the fastest rates in sub-Saharan Africa, and the Greater Banjul Area housing over two-thirds of our national population, we face both unprecedented opportunities and pressing challenges. Today's workshop represents our commitment to transform these challenges into catalysts for inclusive, sustainable development.
The Matrix of Functions methodology we are introducing is more than a technical tool, it is a pathway to evidence-based decision-making that will help us identify where our people need services most, where infrastructure gaps exist, and where strategic investments can yield the greatest impact for all Gambians. This directly advances our commitment to SDG 11, making cities and human settlements inclusive, safe, resilient and sustainable ensuring that no one is left behind in our urban transformation.
Distinguished Participants,
Your participation is even more crucial because we brought together government officials, regional representatives, and technical experts, and this ensures that the voices of communities across all regions are heard and reflected in our spatial planning decisions.
This workshop also exemplifies the spirit of South-South cooperation, as we learn alongside our Senegalese partners, recognizing that sustainable urbanization knows no borders. The interconnectedness of our economies, societies, and environments demands collaborative solutions.
Over the next three days, you will acquire tools that can reshape how we plan our cities and towns not just for today, but for generations to come. I encourage you to engage fully, share your local knowledge, and embrace this opportunity to build a more equitable, resilient, and prosperous Gambia.
I thank you for listening and wish you a very successful 3 days of meaningful dialogue to shape and make our communities better and safer.
Thank you.
