Hon. Minister of Youth and Sports,

The German Ambassador to The Gambia,

The Media,
Good Morning to you all,
It is my distinct honor to address you today at the launch of The Gambia's National Action Plan on Youth, Peace and Security – a milestone achievement that marks a new chapter in our collective journey toward sustainable peace and development.
Today, we witness the culmination of an unprecedented consultative process that engaged over 2,000 young Gambians across the nation. This extensive engagement, conducted throughout 2023 and 2024, demonstrates our unwavering commitment to ensuring that youth voices are not just heard, but actively shape the policies that affect their lives.
The journey to this moment has been remarkable. We have seen young Gambians emerge as powerful catalysts for positive change, particularly during the nation's critical transition to democracy. Their role as advocates for human rights, democracy, and freedom of expression has been instrumental in shaping the country's future. This National Action Plan builds upon and institutionalizes their demonstrated capacity for leadership and positive change.
What makes this NAP truly exceptional is its inclusive approach. The participation of representatives from all regions of The Gambia, persons living with disabilities, ensures that this framework reflects our society's full spectrum of voices and experiences. This inclusivity is not just a moral imperative, it is essential for building lasting peace and stability.
In developing this NAP, The Gambia joins a select group of nations that have responded to UN Security Council Resolution 2250's call for increased youth representation in decision-making at all levels. Uniquely, this plan intersects with transitional justice processes, creating a comprehensive approach to sustainable peace that recognizes the interconnected nature of justice, reconciliation, and youth empowerment.
The collaborative spirit that brought us here today – the partnership between the National Youth Council, UNDP, UNFPA, GIZ, and numerous other stakeholders – must continue to drive us forward. The real work lies ahead in translating this framework into tangible opportunities for youth engagement in peacebuilding and decision-making processes. The launch of The Gambia’s National Action Plan on Youth, Peace, and Security marks a significant milestone in our collective efforts to empower young people as key agents of peace and development. I want to particularly recognize the invaluable contributions of UNDP and UNFPA in supporting the development of this critical document, ensuring that the voices, aspirations, and potential of Gambian youth are at the heart of national peacebuilding efforts. This collaboration exemplifies our commitment to delivering as one UN, working in unity to support The Gambia in building a more peaceful, inclusive, and resilient society for all.
I call upon all stakeholders present today, government officials, development partners, civil society organizations, and young leaders to move from commitment to action. Let us work closely to ensure that this National Action Plan becomes a living document that transforms the landscape of youth participation in peace and security. The future of peace and stability in The Gambia depends on our ability to harness the energy, creativity, and dedication of our youth, including those with disabilities.
With this NAP, The Gambia sets an example for the region in youth empowerment and inclusive peacebuilding. Success will be measured not by words on paper, but by the active participation of young people in shaping their nation's future. The United Nations system stands ready to support the government and people of The Gambia in realizing the ambitious goals outlined in this NAP.
I thank you for your kind attention and urge everyone to continue to unite in our commitment to youth empowerment, inclusive peace, and sustainable development.
