UN Resident Coordinator in The Gambia statement at the Cooperation Framework validation workshop
In a significant development for The Gambia, UN Resident Coordinator, Ms. Seraphine Wakana, delivered a compelling address at the United Nations Sustainable Development Cooperation Framework (UNSDCF) validation workshop. This speech marked a pivotal moment in the country's development journey, as the UNSDCF, a five-year plan, was officially validated. This plan is the fruit of a collaborative endeavor involving the United Nations Country Team (UNCT), the Government of The Republic of The Gambia, and a host of stakeholders from the development, humanitarian, and peace sectors.
Ms. Wakana emphasized the importance of the day's proceedings, stating, "Today’s validation is the result of numerous engagements, a testament to the collaborative spirit that has brought us together to start this very important process outlining UN support to The Gambia as the UNDAF phases out after six years."
The UN Resident Coordinator underscored the UNSDCF's alignment with the 2030 Agenda and the principles enshrined in the UN Charter. The framework, she noted, is deeply rooted in The Gambia's Green and Recovery focused National Development Plan (NDP) and is dedicated to achieving the Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs). She also highlighted the framework's strong emphasis on a human rights-based approach, gender equality, and people-focused practices.
Ms. Wakana outlined the key objectives of the UNSDCF, which include guiding a collective response to assist The Gambia in addressing national priorities and closing gaps in its SDG journey. The framework aims to remodel economic policies around sustainability, driving a comprehensive, diverse, and job-focused economic transformation.
The UN Resident Coordinator also emphasized the UNSDCF's commitment to fostering partnerships that catalyze transformative change. She stated, "The UNSDCF seeks to promote partnerships that catalyze transformative change, working closely with the government, civil society organizations, and the private sector. Collaboration and multi-stakeholder engagement are essential for achieving sustainable development."
In her concluding remarks, Ms. Wakana expressed her gratitude to all those involved in the development of the UNSDCF. She hailed their dedication and expertise as instrumental in shaping this framework, which will serve as a roadmap towards achieving sustainable development in The Gambia. She called for renewed vigor and determination to ensure the successful implementation of the UNSDCF, aiming to leave a lasting impact on the lives of the Gambian people.
