Fatoumatta Manneh is the founder of Sparkle Fresh, a liquid soap business she launched in November 2024 after completing an online masterclass. Fatoumatta was driven by a passion for hygiene and a strong desire for self-employment.
Before participating in her first trade event, Fatoumatta sold mainly through word of mouth and direct referrals. “I had never exhibited at a trade show before,” she explains. “Limited exposure and lack of information held me back.”
That changed when she took part in the GCCI Trade Fair Gambia International 2025, the country’s largest trade event, organized by the Gambia Chamber of Commerce and Industry (GCCI). Fatoumatta was supported by the EU Youth Empowerment Project – Tourism and Creative Industries, a project funded by the European Union and implemented by the International Trade Centre (ITC).
In preparation for the event, Fatoumatta received training on branding, marketing strategies and customer engagement. “The ITC team guided me and helped improve how I presented my products,” she says.
At the trade fair, she showcased Sparkle Fresh liquid soap in various sizes - from 500ml bottles to bulk containers of 20 liters - targeting both retail customers and larger buyers. The response was encouraging. “I gained new customers and received positive feedback,” Fatoumatta shares. One highlight was making her first bulk sale at the event - a milestone that boosted her confidence and motivation.
The trade fair also significantly increased Sparkle Fresh’s visibility. “Since the event, my social media engagement has gone up and I have received more inquiries and additional sales,” she reports.
Participating in the trade fair also helped Fatoumatta overcome personal challenges. “I used to have stage fright, but I learned how to confidently pitch my product to strangers,” she says. This new confidence has become a cornerstone of her business growth.
Looking ahead, Fatoumatta plans to expand Sparkle Fresh by placing products in more retail outlets and building a strong online presence. “I definitely want to attend more trade fairs and explore online sales,” she said.
Fatoumatta’s journey with Sparkle Fresh shows how targeted training and market access initiatives, can empower entrepreneurs to overcome barriers and grow their businesses.
