Statement by the UN Resident Coordinator World NGO Day

Esteemed representatives of civil society organizations, and colleagues,

Good Morning to you all

Today, as we mark the International Day of NGOs, I wish to recognize the invaluable contributions of civil society organizations to human rights, social justice, and sustainable development globally.

This year's theme, "Empowering Grassroots Movements for a Sustainable Future," underscores the critical role of community-based organizations in creating lasting change. These organizations amplify the voices of marginalized communities and implement solutions grounded in local contexts.

The United Nations acknowledges the exemplary work of TANGO in strengthening civil society networks and community resilience. We remain firmly committed to deepening our partnership with TANGO, combining our complementary strengths and resources to accelerate progress toward the Sustainable Development Goals. This collaboration represents precisely the kind of multi-stakeholder approach essential for addressing our shared challenges.

Despite facing challenges including limited funding, policy restrictions, and exclusion from decision-making processes, grassroots NGOs continue to fill critical gaps in service delivery and advocacy. Their persistence demands our support through resources, knowledge sharing, and meaningful partnerships.

The United Nations remains committed to strengthening collaboration with grassroots organizations, recognizing that the success of the Sustainable Development Goals depends on local action. Their proximity to communities ensures development efforts are impactful, sustainable, and inclusive.

To empower these movements effectively, we must increase access to flexible funding, invest in capacity building, and create platforms where grassroots voices shape policies affecting their futures. We must also protect civic space to enable an environment that respects human rights and values local leadership.

On behalf of the UN system in The Gambia, I reaffirm our commitment to supporting grassroots organizations and ensuring local actors remain at the heart of global progress. 

Together, we can build a future where no one is left behind.
