Weaving a Safety Net: UN Gambia's 2023 Social Protection Success

In a small Gambian village, Amie gently rocks her youngest child while her older ones play nearby. Her eyes, once clouded with worry, now shine with hope.

 "Before, I constantly lived with stress, unsure how I would provide the next meal," she recalls. "Now I can breathe easier, plan, and give my children more than just the bare minimum."

Amie's story echoes across The Gambia, where UN-led social protection initiatives are transforming lives. Through a groundbreaking collaboration between the World Bank and the government, supported by UN agencies, over 250,000 children like Fatou's now benefit from a robust social protection system.

In a nearby town, Mamadou, a local shopkeeper, notices a change. "More families are coming to buy essentials," he says. "It's like a weight has been lifted from the community." 

This shift is no coincidence. UN Gambia's food aid program has reached 28,525 people, distributing 702 metric tons of crucial supplies, ensuring that fewer Gambians go to bed hungry. 

At the local school, teacher Aminata beams with pride. "Last year, many of my students were at risk of dropping out. Now, thanks to UN support, 16,150 children across the country are staying in school, including many in my class.", she explains. 

Education, once a distant dream for many, is becoming a reality.

But the UN's reach extends beyond classrooms and dinner tables. In government offices, officials pore over a new study on shock-responsive and gender-focused social safety nets. 

"This research is groundbreaking," says Lamin, a policy advisor. "It's helping us build a system that can withstand crises and truly support our most vulnerable citizens."

As the sun sets, social worker Isatou makes her final home visit of the day. She's part of a UN-supported case management system that has addressed 1,824 child protection cases this year. 

"Every child we help is a victory," she says, her determination evident. "We're building a safer Gambia, one family at a time."

From policy changes to direct aid, from keeping children in school to protecting the most vulnerable, UN Gambia's 2023 initiatives are weaving a stronger social fabric. As Amie puts her children to bed, she whispers a prayer of gratitude. 

"For the first time in years," she says, "I'm not just surviving. I'm planning for a better tomorrow."
